学習目標 (到達目標)
This course challenges students to identify key characteristics of American comics, both physical characteristics as well as intangible ones. It explores the rich and complex history of comics in America, and their evolution as a form of entertainment and art, as well as a reflection of society’s values.
本コースでは、アメリカンコミックスの有形・無形の特徴を特定することに挑戦します。アメリカにおける豊かで複雑なコミックの歴史、コミックの娯楽と芸術の一形態としての進化、コミックに社会の価値観が反映されていることについて探究します。

授業概要 (教育目的)
In this course, students will not only learn about the main components of American comics as well as their evolution, while working to improve academic English skills in all four areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will also learn that comics are a reflection of society’s values and heavily influence society, affecting both comic readers and those who shun the genre.

This course will employ an active learning approach to learning mixed with lectures. Students will work by themselves and in pairs and small groups to complete activities that explore the field of psychology.

第1回
Lesson 1 What are Comics? And how did they come to be?
This lesson will define the huge and varied concept of sequential art (comics), clearly distinguishing it from other genres. We will examine the forms of comics that have existed throughout history. This lesson provides students a clear understanding of the basic characteristics of comics and an overview of their history.

第2回
Lesson 2 Interpreting the Image(s)
This class explores how readers interpret all the parts of comics. From realistic or abstract pictorial icons that represent people, things and ideas, to the frames and transitions between panels, we will explore how the reader must create closure, understanding both the visible and invisible ideas that are represented. This lesson helps students understand the different factors influencing how the reader interprets comics.

第3回
Lesson 3 Showing Time and Movement  
This class will introduce students to the considerations and techniques of showing the often non-linear passage of time in comics. From image choice and location, to transitions between panels, to words, time is inconsistent in comics, allowing for it to be represented many ways. The class will explore the different ways of showing movement in comics, comparing American comic styles to ones popular in Europe and Japan. This lesson helps students become aware of the different ways that time and movement are represented in American comics.

Lesson 4 The Platinum and Golden Ages
This class will feature comics from early cave drawings, in the Platinum Age, through to the modern rise in comics, the Golden Age. It will explore the popularity of comics through the two ages, including popular themes and characters. Students will discuss how comics reflected the values of society in the different ages. This lesson helps students understand the themes and styles of comics in the Platinum and Golden Ages.

Lesson 5 Color and Superheroes Today
The class will examine how color has been used in American comics over the years, including its effect on the reader. We will discuss the role changing technology plays in color and comic styles. Students will compare the use of color with characters that exist in both the Golden Age and modern American comics. This lesson helps students learn the influence color has had in comics.

The group presentation allows groups of students to demonstrate what they have learned in class and connect it to American comics of their choice.

第9回
Lesson 9 How Comics Code Changed the Course of Comics
This class will explore the pivotal change in American comics experienced during the Silver Age: The Comics Code. Resulting from Frederic Wertham’s influence on social acceptance of comics, the code introduced extreme censorship, limiting the characters, artists and themes in American Comics. This lesson helps students to recognize the cause and effects of the Comic Code on American comics.

Lesson 10 The Bronze Age
This class will examine comics from the Bronze Age, a time of heavy censorship, when American comics had to reflect only the purest of American values. Students will also look at the pioneering art that began the revolution against the limitation of expression. This lesson provides examples of comics that were born in times of heavy censorship and identify comics that rebelled against the censorship.

Lesson 11 Emotions: Showing and Telling  
This class will teach students different techniques for showing emotions and sensations, evoking emotions and reactions in the reader. These are accomplished with both picture icons as well as with words, which represent emotions both with the meaning of the word and the physical shapes of the letters. This lesson helps students understand the vitally important role of emotions in comics and how to communicate them.

Lesson 12 The Dark Age
The class will look at the Dark Age of American comics, when anti-superheroes dominated and marginalized people and values that had been largely ignored for 40 years became popular. From heroes battling addiction to experiences in Nazi concentration camps, American comics of this time focused on adult themes and controversial issues. This lesson makes students aware of the themes and values reflected in American comics from the Dark Age.

Lesson 13 The Business of Comics
This class will explore how comics influenced business and are influenced by business. This will include influences such as the commercialism of comics and their characters, corporate and business development influences, the role of the movie industry as well as authorial rights. This lesson raises student awareness of the corporate control of American comics.
