To be able to create a one-minute speech about your favourite city.

| 授業概要 （教育目的） |
|
This is a required course of all first grade students, focusing on creating effective speeches for the target audience/culture and specific presentation techniques such as creating effective slides, how to write overview sentences in the speech introduction and using transitions words and gestures.
|

Attendance and participation (Questions asked in Q&A after presentations etc.): 20%
Quizzes: 10%
Speeches (fluency, vocabulary, speech skills): 70%

| 課題の内容 |
|
Make a 2 minute presentation script and powerpoint slides.
Teacher will give you feedback and you will improve it before presenting it.

Teacher introduces self and about Project 1 (City speech).
Instructions for submission of assignments etc.
Discuss "Informative Speeches".
Worksheet #1: Listen to Lisa’s speech about Portland for comprehension and fill in the chart. (p. 16)

Discuss Presentation structure: Intro, Body & Conclusion (p. 58, 62).
How to write the introduction including overview sentence, transition words.
Worksheet #2. Intro to Transition words - Put the sentences of a ship captain story in order. (p. 60)

Island tour. Practice giving an island tour using transition words. (p. 75)

|
Designing Powerpoint slides. Listen to teacher’s instructions about using basic graphic design techniques like contrast, white space and motion.
Discuss some practical examples (past student work) in groups.

Look and comment on some current year's students’ work-in-progress.
Review speech structure & discuss writing the conclusion.

Talk about Q&A to be done after student speeches.

We will occasionally use copies from the textbook Speaking of Speech, but there is no need to buy it.
