授業概要
This course is strongly rooted in the concept of integrated content and language learning (CLIL.) You will be improving your English comprehension
and your higher order thinking skills at the same time. Content topics are based on what is considered most useful (and thus motivational) for graduates
of the typical Japanese high school curriculum, as well as what has been popular in the previous years of this class. Some examples include; personality,
creativity, time management, and personal finance. In dealing with more challenging topics and language, you will greatly expand your vocabulary and
create a habit of constructing your English communication around the structure of the topic, rather than just around the English language structures that
you have been hitherto most comfortable using. This will be good not only for your English but for your curiosity and life skills too.

1. You will greatly increase both your passive and active vocabulary.
2. You will improve your ability to express concepts and thoughts at intermediate and advanced levels.
3. You will gain confidence and ability to understand and respond to ambiguity and broken communication.

成績評価方法・基準
Participation 70%*,  Quizzes and presentations 30%**   (*Students cannot receive participation scores for classes they do not attend.)

**Online quizzes to review and confirm understanding of key topics will be given regularly. At various points during the course, students will
be required to give short presentations to the class reporting on their experiences with the ideas covered in these classes. In both cases,
sufficient notice and opportunity to prepare in class will be given.

There will be little, if any, formal study for homework. Instead, students will be encouraged to implement the techniques covered in class in their daily lives and prepare to report back on their experiences.

第1回
Administration (instructor lecture, Q&A)
  - Rules about attendance, lateness, excused absences
  - Explanation of class content, goals, expectations
第2回
Interview (in English) one-on-one with instructor
  - Your previous English study history, goals, level of motivation for English study
  - Pertinent personal information (in strict confidence) if needed
第3回
Topic  -  Lifespan minus personal experience = time left to learn

               (1) Instructor lecture/comments, Group content/language analysis
                     - "Traditions are experiments that worked." ("Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.")
                     - “A state without the means of change is without the means of its conservation.”

Topic  -  Lifespan minus personal experience = time left to learn

               (2) Group discussion/Class discussion
                    - What is the intended meaning of the Ying/Yang symbol? What is it trying to communicate to us?
                      (Homework task: start keeping a sleep diary.)

Topic  -  The choices in life and the importance of balance

               (1) Instructor lecture/comments, Group content/language analysis
                    - "Give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Topic  -  The choices in life and the importance of balance

               (2) Group discussion/Class discussion
                    - What are the things that we cannot change? What are the things that we can? If we can, does that always mean we should?

Topic  -  How do people spend their lives?

               (1) Instructor lecture/comments, Group content/language analysis
                    - In groups try to identify, rank by time and estimate total time of the top ten lifetime activities
                    - Examination of actual data
第8回
Topic  -  How do people spend their lives?

               (2) Group discussion/Class discussion
                    What surprised you in the results? What are the implications of the results for life choices?
