授業概要 |
This course will reflect on how art and architecture are influenced by various religious belief systems. We will first look at the art work and architecture generated by major religions in Asia: Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Shintoism. Next, we will look at western religious belief systems, and the art work generated by Religion in Ancient and Classical Greece and Rome and Christianity. 美術、および建築様式が、様々な宗教から受けた影響を学んでいきます。まず、アジアの主要宗教、すなわちヒンズー教、仏教、儒教、神道を。次に、西洋の宗教、すなわち古代ギリシャと古代ローマの宗教、キリスト教を。各々の宗教の産み出した芸術作品、および建築様式を考察します。

到達目標 |
Students will become familiar with the English terminology related to each religion, art and architectural forms.
各宗教、美術、建築様式に関する専門用語を英語で理解する。
Students will develop descriptive vocabulary to allow them to effectively express their opinions on various religions and art forms based on the respective religions.
様々な宗教、およびそれに基づく芸術形式について、自分の考えを効果的に表現できるように、関連語彙を増強する。
They will learn to identify roots of current art forms that are related to various religions.
現在における芸術形式の根源となる、様々な宗教との関連性を、識別することができるようになる。
Finally, they will present their own art work based on one or more religions using the concepts or principles of religious art.
ひとつ、もしくは複数の宗教をもとに、宗教芸術の概念、原理を生かした学生自身の作品を提出する。

成績評価方法・基準 |
Participation: 40% (授業への積極性 40%) Online Nearpod Tests - Demonstrate the ability to extract relevant information from reference materials and answer correctly.
Weekly Assessment: 30% (週毎の評価30%) Mini assignments - Students need to submit brief written papers and artwork for presentation in class. The paper's length should range from 150 to 300 words, depending on the student's English proficiency level.
Final Assessment: 30% (期末評価30%) Final Presentation - Present ideas in a clear and organized manner. Use well-structured sentences to convey thoughts. Use appropriate artistic terminology and artwork.

課題の内容 |
Students must submit a written paper on the Final Presentation topic, accompanied by original artwork, one week prior to the event. The paper should have a word count between 300 and 500, depending on the student's English proficiency level.

Introduction on Hinduism and Hindu art (cont'd.) ヒンズー教とヒンズー芸術 Just as Shiva takes on the persona of a creator, protector, and destroyer, we often take on numerous roles throughout the day. Make a list of the various roles you engage in your daily life (e.g. student, athlete, sibling, friend) and select three or more to use as an inspiration for a self-portrait.

Introduction on Buddhism and Buddhist art (cont'd.) 仏教と仏教芸術 Students will look at some of the auspicious Buddhist symbols and discuss their meaning. Students will also look at various mudras and discuss their meaning. Students look at an artwork known as a Mandala that depicts artistically the concept of The Wheel of Life based on Tantric Buddhism.

Introduction on Confucianism (cont'd.) 道教 Confucianism is a doctrine on how to live and strive to be an Ideal Person in society. One way in achieving that is by pursing "Arts of Peace." Poems are a form of literary art. Write two styles of poetry in English, and design art that best reflect your poems.

Introduction on Shintoism and Shinto art 神道と神道芸術 The origins and development of the religion. The principal beliefs and key practices. The traditional art and architectural forms. Selected and illustrated examples of art and architecture.

Introduction on Shintoism and Shinto art (cont'd.) 神道と神道芸術 Research, and show how Shinto rituals, customs and traditions have affected your lives over the years. You will need to share your research and the effects Shintoism has had in Japanese society with the class.

Introduction on Christianity and Christian art キリスト教とキリスト教芸術 The origins and development of the religion. To learn to look closely at a work of art and consider line, shape, color, texture, and composition. To understand that art is a form of communication.

Introduction on Byzantine art ビザンチン芸術 To learn that a work of art can provide information about the ideals and beliefs of the society in which it was made, in this case the early Byzantine Empire. To learn how artists illustrate narratives in their work by selecting key events and by using symbols to help convey the meaning of a scene. To learn what relief sculpture is and that it requires great skill in design and production.

Introduction on Renaissance art ルネサンスの芸術 Students will look at paintings as illustrations of daily life. Students will document in writing what they see. Students will learn to use primary source materials as reference for details and facts about daily life.

Final Project 最終プロジェクト Students will conceptualize and develop an art work of their own based on any one or more of the religions and religious art work. ひとつ、もしくは複数の宗教、および宗教芸術を選び、概念化して、それに基づく芸術作品を制作する。 Students will present and discuss their art work. クラス発表会形式で、作品のプレゼンテーションをする。
