This course will introduce students to the basics of making public speeches in English. It will include: methods for generating content, making outlines, basic presentation skills, and an introduction to expressions and conventions used in English speeches. Students will have in-class opportunities to practice and refine their skills. This course is required for all first year Japanese students.

"To introduce students to the basics of making and presenting speeches in English.
To introduce students to online tools to foster independent learning.
To familiarize students with common vocabulary and idioms used in English speeches.
To provide students with opportunities to practice and refine their speech making skills."

Students will be graded on participation (30%) a mid-term presentation (35%), and final presentation (35%).

Students will be required to give a 5-minute presentation on a topic.

Review. Review of Speeches. Explanation of mid-term assignment.

Form and Theory 1: Analysis and Discussion of Body language and gestures in speeches. Pronunciation tips (SOS p.28-35).

Language Learning 1: Language conventions used in story telling. Use of the present and past tense in story telling.

Language Learning 2: Language conventions used in story telling. Use of the past perfect and past future tense.

Language Practice 1: Developing your speeches.

Language Practice 2: Developing your speeches.

Language Practice 3: Refining your speeches.

Presentations (Mid-term Presentation).

Review: Review of poster presentations. Explanation of final assignment. Methods of generating content.

Form and Theory 1: Analysis and Discussion of poster designs. Advanced visual design considerations.

Language Learning 1: Making generalizations. Giving background information,
