The title of this course, "Presentation" gives a clear sign of its main content format: you will analyze content, prepare for and do presentations weekly in front of the class.
The contents of the presentations will be various but they will all be based on common communication scenarios, for example, meeting people, storytelling, asking for help,
offering suggestions, and so on. Although the presentations will mostly be solo, you will do most of your preparation and practice for them in groups or pairs.
In fact, much of the content of your presentations will be summarizing and reporting on the content of pair or group interaction that happened in class or outside of school.
Thus, as part of getting ready for your presentations, you will also have many opportunities to practice communication. In short, this course aims to benefit two important
skill areas at the same time.

1. You will gain much experience and acquire confidence in speaking English in front of an audience.
2. You will improve your ability to combine your current English speaking ability with brief written prompts, in order to express yourself publicly.
3. You will acquire knowledge of communicative patterns to increase your confidence and ability in face-to-face communication.

Participation 70%*     (*you cannot receive participation points for classes which you do not attend, with the exception of excused absences.)
In order to obtain a full participation score for each class, you must make a sincere attempt at any tasks given and must complete your weekly presentation. Note: repeated lateness without good reason will result in participation points being reduced.

Semester review 30%
Towards the end of each semester, you will have to do your weekly presentations again. You will receive up to 30% of your final grade for successfully completing
this review session.

Where class time is insufficient for you to complete your preparation, you will be required to complete it for homework
When no specific homework is given, I still encourage you to review each class in your own time, if possible.

Topic 18 - Story telling

           (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:
                - "Once upon a time/One day"
                - "(Someone) was (do)ing ~, when (someone else) did ~"
                - Direct quotation

            (2)  Individual preparation
                - Plan out a true story arc
                - Vocabulary check (past simple verbs)
                - Write out story in full

Topic 18 - Story telling
               (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:
                 - Pair practice

             (2) Topic 18 - weekly presentation - story telling
                 - Individual presentation to class

Topic 19 - Telephoning
           (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:
                 - "May I speak to ~/May I ask your number?" (requests)
                 - "May I help you?/May I take a message?" (offers)
                 - "S/He is in a meeting/out to lunch/taking a day off/away on business."
                 - "I will give him/her your message."
                 - "Certainly."

            (2)  Pair preparation
                 - following script, substitute names
                 - gradual memorization

Topic 19 - Telephoning
               (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:
                 - review and rotation practice (eyes down)

               (2) Topic 19 - weekly presentation - telephoning
                  - Pair presentation to class, twice with role reversal

Topic 20 - Assistance with train directions
           (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:
                - "You look lost. May I help you?"
                - "Take the ~ line to ~. Change to the ~ line."
                - "About how long does it take?"
                - "About how much does it cost?"

            (2)  Pair preparation
                 - Practice in rotation with fixed route (gradual memorization)

Topic 20 - Assistance with train directions
               (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:
                 - Review and  practice in rotation with real routes (two lines, one transfer minimum)

             (2) Topic 20 - weekly presentation - Assistance with train directions
                  - Pair presentation to class, twice with role reversal

Topic 21 - Numbers
           (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:
                - Syllable count/emphasis
                - "Thirteen/Thirty, Fourteen/Forty, etc."
                - "Thousand, million, billion, trillion."

            (2)  Group preparation (rotation practice)
                 - 1-100 (with correct emphasis)
                 - 601-700 (with correct emphasis)

Topic 21 - Numbers

Topic 22 - Planning the future
           (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:
                - "Will (do)" versus "Going to (do)" versus "Be (do)ing"
                - Food (Japanese terms that have become English)

            (2)  Group preparation
                - Make a restaurant menu (starters, mains, sides)

Topic 22 - Planning the future
               (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:
                - "A table for ~"
                - "Are you ready to order?"
                - "Sorry I'm late!"
                - "Very good."

                - Group performance of restaurant scene

Topic 23 - My plans for the future (positive motivation)
           (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:

            (2)  Pair preparation
                - "Five years from now, what will your life be like?"
                - Include future activities/accomplishments in the meantime

Topic 23 - My plans for the future (positive motivation)
               (1)  Pair/group language analysis, instructor comments:
                - "Let me tell you about myself five years from now."
                - "Because I will have (done) ~, I will be (do)ing ~"
                - "Because I will have (done) ~, I will be ~ ."
